Tips for Making Great Observations

The most valuable observations include accurate date, time, and location details and are verifiable with a supporting photo or sound recording. Here are some tips to make your observations as useful as possible:

1) Take Clear Photos

Make sure your subject is in focus. Crop photos so the subject fills the frame. Take photos of your subject from different angles so other users can identify it.

2) Add Location

Enable location services in the app so INaturalist can include the exact location of your observation.

3) Respect Nature

Respect wildlife and other visitors, and follow the Leave No Trace principles. Take only photos, leave only footprints.

How Do Your Observations Help?

1) Track invasive plants and insects

Track the density and spread of invasive species at Raystown Lake.

2) Find new places where rare species live

Uncover rare (or new!) species and where they make their homes at Raystown Lake.

3) Track the phenology of organisms

See how species living at Raystown Lake change throughout the seasons.

4) Inform future wildlife rehab projects

Data gathered on species diversity will be used by USACE staff to guide habitat improvement.

5) And more!
